Malta Society of Arts’ Gold Medal 2023 awarded to Austin Camilleri
The Malta Society of Arts’ (MSA) has chosen Gozitan artist Austin Camilleri as the honorary receiver of the prestigious Gold Medal for 2023, in recognition of his local and international artistic work throughout the years.
Described as a “key figure in Malta’s art scene for over 25 years,” the MSA sought to recognise his artistic achievements in the contemporary local and international visual arts scene. Austin’s art has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in museums, biennales, private galleries, and public spaces across Europe, America, North Africa, and Asia, demonstrating his wide-reaching influence and acclaim.
This prestigious award, along with a certificate, was presented to Camilleri at a private ceremony on December 14th. The event took place at Palazzo de La Salle, the Malta Society of Arts’ headquarters in Valletta.
Among those in attendance were President George Vella, the president and committee of the MSA, Camilleri’s family and friends, as well as numerous esteemed guests, all gathered to celebrate this significant achievement in Camilleri’s illustrious career.
Austin Camilleri now joins an illustrious list of past recipients who have made remarkable contributions in their respective fields. This list of esteemed individuals includes Sir Temi Zammit (1904), a leading figure in Maltese history and culture; Robert Caruana Dingli (1916), a prominent Maltese artist; Emvin Cremona (1963), known for his significant contributions to Maltese art; Oreste Chircop (1997), another celebrated Maltese artist; Richard England (1984), a renowned architect and academic; Joseph Calleja (2007), a world-famous tenor; Karmen Azzopardi (2009), a distinguished figure in Maltese theater and drama; Harry Alden (2013), a respected artist and educator; and Carmine Lauri (2015), an accomplished violinist.
This honour places Camilleri in a lineage of outstanding individuals who have not only excelled in their artistic endeavours but have also significantly contributed to the cultural and artistic heritage of Malta.
