Now/you/see/me – A solo by Johanna Barthet

Psychology has often been a strong force finding its way into art, after all art is a personal expression from within. Now/you/see/me is a an emotional and psychological journey of self-discovery, embarked on by artist Johanna Barthet. These miniature wooden blocks, measuring 15cm x 15cm, are time capsules of portraits depicting different phases of anxiety, confusion, enlightenment and acceptance. Small in size, yet bursting with emotion and a plethora of moods, these paintings are engaging, alluring and at times even provoking. Her work echoes the French impressionists and expressionist art of the turn of the century, however they are relatable and that is what makes them relevant.
Their texture and brush strokes also differ in style, from almost 200 works no artwork or expression is the same. It is evident, that for artist Johanna, art was her outlet, particularly at a time where one was isolated during the pandemic, for she has been working on this selection of works for the past four years. This collection of works will mark Johanna’s fourth solo show, in her artistic career.
