OPEN CALL: Clay / Craft / Concept: contemporary ceramics, ancient histories, by Malta Society of Arts

What is the difference between a sculpture and a beautifully crafted but functional object, such as a mug or a vase?

The latest open call for artists based both in Malta and abroad by the Malta Society of Arts intends to examine this very question as a starting point within the Maltese context, seeking to observe contemporary ceramics both on the island and beyond.

“The exhibition will frame functional clay objects alongside ceramic sculpture and ancient pottery in order to prompt questions around craft-oriented practice within the context of fine-art thinking – what do functionality and materiality tell us about ourselves and the world we live in?” the open call explains.

Deeming itself as a stronghold for supporting crafts, with a history of clay education, this open call aims to flow from this same legacy, while “also bringing the society’s activity into dialogue with contemporary currents of thought”.

The Society invites artists working in ceramics and clay-based media to apply by submitting their CV and portfolio to [email protected]

Deadline: 19th March 2024.

This exhibition is funded, organised and presented by the Malta Society of Arts.
