Short Bio

Julian Mallia aka Julinu is a Maltese visual artist specialising in concept-driven work.
 
His practice shuffles continuously between three main creative areas:
1) Fine-art traditional oil painting;
2) Digital illustration, as well as;
3) Drumming (with band Weeping Silence and other side projects). 

 
His most representative visual work is typically idea-driven, characterised by atmospheric and surreal imagery and occasionally laced with dry humour. Originally a psychology graduate and with several years of advertising agency experience he now combines a range of skills to create thought-provoking imagery within fine-art, advertising, animation, publishing and editorial contexts.
 
Notable recognition includes:
 
• Awarded “Artist of the Year” – Malta Arts Awards (Il-Premju ghall-Arti) in 2020;
• Awarded at the AOI World Illustration Awards in 2016;
• Nominated in the “Audience’s Choice” category at the  Malta Arts Awards 2020 for the solo exhibition “Julinu’s Radioactive Ravioli“;
• Featured in “The Power and Influence of Illustration” – a book about the persuasive power of illustration published by Bloomsbury UK in 2019;
• Honourable mention at the annual show by The Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles in 2020;
• Honourable Mentions by “3×3 Magazine” (US) in 2019.
