Enclose

Size: 15cm x 15cm x 6cm

Medium: Ceramic and Steel

Year: 2019

Enclose is a hybrid womb-temple. It plays with scale, texture and pattern, suggests movement through solid and void, positive and negative imprints and forgotten spaces.

A wall piece made of 4 ceramic bricks on a steel backing plate, the surface is painted and etched; oval apses are carved out of stratified clay. It is rich with the imprints of tools and moving sediment, like clues on an archeological site. The piece references the plan of Mnajdra Temples one of the most ancient religious sites on earth (c.3600 BC), built by primitive people who venerated Mother Goddesses. I choose to carve, working in a subtractive rather than additive process, echoing the limestone spaces of my childhood in Malta – where the soft rock is excavated to create cave-like spaces. The piece is about emigrant nostalgia and loss.
