About me
Short Bio | Kevin Sciberras is best known for his paintings of Maltese architectural landmarks. He is mainly inspired by land, sea and sky. His urban and landscapes are completely devoid of figures. In addition to his Maltese iconic spaces, he paints portraits and figures but his figurative works form a separate part of his artistic output. Through his art we perceive familiar places in a whole new way. Each work brings a sublime light into his iconic landmarks. The end result is not planned. He first captures the physical form of a place and then continues to convey the atmosphere and the feel of light until the subject has a life of its own. His subjects have a mysterious quality outside of time. So his paintings become a mixture of detailed elements and abstracted veils that result in dreamlike imagery. His subjects are filled with energy and light. The energy is found in the visible brushstrokes and the rich layers of paint. His creative process involves the build up of layers. Diluted acrylic paint allows him to use very thin washes of layered surfaces of transparent veils. The layers of paint are applied in glazes to allow the light to radiate from within the painting. He sets the world in motion through quick and expressive brushstrokes. Consistent throughout are the planes of light intersecting and overlapping each other. He allows his subjects to fade away into gestural strokes and brilliant highlights that define his style. He lets his emotions dictate his use of colour and the strength of his brushstrokes. In his works there is a concern about the passing of time, ageing and deterioration. The abstract forms capture the fading memories of places. The paintings also allude to the preservation of architectural landmarks. Unfortunately, at times, modernization comes at the expense of heritage and culture.
