In memory of Mark Mallia

Malta’s artistic community mourns the loss of Mark Mallia, a celebrated Maltese artist, who passed away on July 23, 2024, at the age of 59.  Mallia’s passing marks a significant loss, particularly within the Maltese artistic community.

Born on April 20, 1965, in Pietà, Malta, Mark Mallia was a self-taught outsider artist renowned for his eclectic and provocative style. His works, which span abstract and portrait paintings as well as mixed media and ceramic sculptures, are characterized by a dynamic energy and a distinctive, often rebellious spirit.

Mallia’s career was marked by numerous solo and collective exhibitions, both locally and internationally. Notable exhibitions include “Open Closet,” “Postcards from Beyond,” “Black Canvas,” and “Zabach.” He also participated in prestigious events such as the Royal Windsor Racecourse in the UK, Art Basel in Miami week, and shows in Monaco. His works often explored themes of vulnerability, parody, and antagonism, making him a prominent figure in contemporary Maltese art .In addition to his artistic achievements, Mallia was committed to social causes. He notably raised funds and awareness for ALS in Malta, demonstrating his dedication to using art as a means for advocacy and support. He was also the first Maltese artist to collaborate with artificial intelligence, working with Angelo Dalli to explore the intersection of AI and creativity.

His sudden passing is a profound loss to the art community. As we reflect on his contributions, we remember Mark Mallia not only as an artist but as a voice who continually challenged conventions.

During Covid ARTZ ID has launched an initiative to capture exhibitions through 3D Mapping, in doing so we have captured Mark’s exhibition Golgotha at IL-Kamra ta’ Fuq, here is the link to revisit this exhibit : Golgotha Viewing Room

We would like to wish our deepest condolences to family, friends and the artistic community.
