You Are What You Buy by Miss K

2017

The yearlong transdisciplinary project 'You Are What You Buy by Miss K' departs from a reflection on our need to affirm ourselves as consumers. Through anthropological investigation and creative practice, the project aims to question the effects of consumption on us as buyers and assess further the blurred line between ‘consumption’ and ‘consumerism’. In order to study such economic mechanisms both research and final presentation were set in a supermarket in Malta. Furthermore, the project aims to offer a different possibility of where and how to experience art – away from the art institution. Research consisted of observations, and conversations with the clients, director and employees of the supermarket. Extracting a number of shopping patterns led to the creation of a pop-up, interactive, provoking week-long performance art at the supermarket itself. This also included a set of illustrations installed in each of the supermarket’s lifts and a limited collection of wearable items, complemented by a book art publication. The documentation of the process was also presented as an exhibition. In collaboration with social anthropologist, researchers, a dramaturg, a group of performers whose fields range across acting, dancing, music, poetry and visual arts, the supermarket director and the staff, and the clients.
