Self

by Thomas Scerri

‘Self’ forms part of the end of year project for the BFA in Digital Arts at University of Malta. It is based on the exploration of the human psyche in Jungian terms. The human mind is a complicated phenomenon, most of which is still a mystery. It holds many levels in both the conscious as well as the unconscious which all constitute to the personality. All these layers combined, make up the psyche as a whole which Jung calls the ‘Self’. This project attempts to create a visual representation of these layers while still maintaining the vagueness of the subject. Through the combination of audio and visuals, this work addresses the tangible human experience this concept is about while creating a sense of confusion to represent the ambiguity and surreality of the unconscious mind. The concept is very abstract; however, it is based on something that is organic - the brain. This is reflected in the sculptures. Although they are constructed from a material that is normally associated with machines, some took an organic form.
