‘Object-Relations’ series

Exhibited in 'Smudge', Studio 87, Valletta, Malta

This series entitled ‘Object Relations (The Infant as Monster) is made up of twelve drawings which follow the narrative of a boy seduced by the woman. In the first quartet of drawings, it is the woman who initiates sex. As the story unfolds, however, the boy becomes more completely possessed by the sexual urges the woman has unbound in him. In these drawings, the protagonist’s first experiences of sex with the woman make him restless, thirsting for new sensations and new transgressions. There is a hint of a fairytale element in the boy’s lengthening nails, or claws, as his monstrous desires are unleashed. I have always been intrigued by the interplay between what is enticing and what is destructive. I attempted to give flesh to the psychoanalytic theory that what we are deprived of in our childhood will hound us into our adulthood, and it will seek us until it finds us, leading perhaps to our destruction.
