Apotheosis: A new solo exhibition by Darren Tanti at the Jesuit Church Oratories

In a bold departure from his renowned hyperrealist painting style, local artist Darren Tanti has recently unveiled Apotheosis, a contemporary exhibition that delves into the concept of human divinisation while addressing current themes.

Apotheosis is a contemporary reinterpretation of an age-old theme, blending modern art forms with traditional aesthetics to create a unique hybrid collection. Tanti’s latest work aims to confront the realities of humanity’s current state, echoing a universal call to holiness.

The exhibition, which offers a fresh perspective on traditional themes, is open for public viewing at the Oratories at the Jesuit Church in Valletta’s Archbishop Street until January 9th.

At its core, the exhibition navigates the complex path to apotheosis, marked by both external challenges and self-imposed hurdles.

Tanti artistically explores the repercussions of humanity’s actions, such as the exploitation of natural resources, global wealth disparities, conflict, famine, and the abuse of power. These elements serve as metaphoric barriers on the path to enlightenment and serenity.

Within the sanctity of the Jesuit church, Tanti’s pieces invite viewers to enter a state of contemplation. The artworks show reverence towards the sacred space while challenging viewers to reflect on societal issues and the aspirational journey towards transcending our human nature.

Demonstrating a significant evolution in his artistic journey, Tanti moves beyond his signature hyperrealist painting, as first seen in his previous major exhibition “Inaction is a Weapon of Mass Destruction” (2022). This exhibition is characterised by an array of sculptures and objets d’art, incorporating unconventional elements like neon tubes and perspex, which stand out as individual installations yet collectively form a coherent narrative – marking a paradigm shift for the artist.

This innovative blend of contemporary intent and traditional religious art, infused with pop culture elements, marks Apotheosis as a transformative and unconventional addition to Tanti’s oeuvre.

Darren Tanti, born in 1987, has emerged as a significant figure in Malta’s art scene, making a lasting impact with his distinct artistic vision. His work has gained international recognition, highlighted by his participation in prestigious events such as the Venice Biennale of Art in 2017 and the Ostrale Biennale in 2019. These participations have further cemented his standing in the global art community.

Curated by Art Sweven’s Melanie Erixon, who also manages Mqabba’s award-winning Il-Kamra ta’ Fuq, Apotheosis is a collaboration between the Valletta Cultural Agency (VCA) and the Jesuit Church Foundation, showcased within the sacred confines of the Jesuit church complex in Valletta.
