After an extended standstill, it is truly great to see art spaces gradually reopening to the public. While gathering on opening nights is not yet possible, we’ve been long awaiting the chance to go and look at art in person. One exhibition that ARTZ ID is particularly excited about is the upcoming ‘Out of Time’, a solo exhibition by Vince Briffa. The show opens at Arthall Gozo on September 11.
‘Out of Time’ will include works on paper and mixed media paintings. The work has been produced over the last ten years, including during the COVID-19 lockdown. The exhibition explores Briffa’s ongoing interest in people’s relationship with passing time. His work inquires, “What does it mean for a human being to exist in the stretch of time that we call ‘our lifetime’?” In this way, presenting works created over a whole decade strikes a resonance with the subject of the exhibition.
A selection of works by Vince Briffa from the past ten years that will be shown at the artist’s solo exhibition ‘Out of Time’.
The current moment is also a special moment for this body of work to be shown. Many of us have been finding it hard to keep track of time. The pandemic suddenly disrupted our regular routines and everyday rituals. Living through this unprecedented experience creates the opportunity to reconsider our relationship with time from this unique situation.
If you’re planning a trip to Gozo in the coming weeks, make sure to pay ‘Out of Time’ a visit. It is a cultural experience not be missed and a way of supporting the arts during a particularly difficult period for the sector.
Exhibition runs: 11 September – 11 October
Venue address: Arthall Gozo, 8, Triq Agius de Soldanis, Victoria, VCT1031, Malta.
Opening hours: Wednesday to Saturday 10:00 – 13:00 and 17:00 – 19:00, Sunday 10:00 – 12:00 or by appointment with the gallerist or the artist.
As a precautionary measure, there will be no exhibition opening night or night with the artist.

Vince Briffa is an internationally established artist and academic. In his own words, “My work centres on the co-existence of dualities. It treads blurred borders and investigates uncertain divides between opposing poles. It synthesises extremities, and acts as a seam that binds together disparate realities. Uncertain of its own actuality, it questions its own being. I am not a painter or sculptor, I am also not a filmmaker or a writer. I produce ‘work’.” Briffa represented Malta at the Venice Art Biennale in 1999 and 2019. He received the ‘Omaggio all’Arte ed all’Innovazione a Venezia 2019’ by The Union of Honorary Consuls of Italy (UCOI) and the National Association of Young Innovators (ANGI) – Venice Biennale, 2019 – Arts Council Malta.
